Tax Calculations?

Postby dmax on Mon Jun 22, 2009 7:27 am

Has anyone ever had a problem with the software not calculating the tax properly? Our tax rate is 8% and it is right in the system but my tax is always off a dollar or 2?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dustin,

Hello and welcome to the forum.

In answer to your question, quite simply the answer is no. I've never seen math done incorrectly. There may be some disagreement on the rounding methods, but should at most account for a penny or two here and there.

However, most commonly when you do find strange tax amounts, it's due to either shop supplies or hazmat being taxed.

Welcome to the forum. There are some Texas members here who can help. The program should be unfaltering when it comes to calculations.

How can I find out if it is taxing Shop Supplies or Hazmat? Our tax is below what it should actually be so I don't think that is the problem.

Here is the current problem we are having...

Parts: $1225.40X8% = 98.03 which should be the tax on this invoice.

The computer is calculating the tax to be $96.53.

Any other ideas? I'm sure it is something I'm missing on my end.

Thanks for the help.

You can go to Setup>Shop Data>shop/Hazmat and see if you have the checks in the boxes for taxing those fees. If you don't want that taxed, remove the checks.

But, your calculation is more than the computers, so I wouldn't suspect this as a cause.

Ok I just checked and SS and hazmat are ok.

So I am showing 96.53 as my tax. I opened options and changed the invoice from taxable to non-taxable. Then opened options again and changed it back to taxable and the tax rate is now correct.

It sounds crazy but it is what I did and now it is right. I'm not sure what I was doing to make the tax rate off like it was.

Anyway it is working right now. Thanks for the quick help.

Good to hear. Maybe the setting was jumbled or the program just didn't recognize it. To get those results, the tax would have to be set at 7.878% or so. Very strange.

When Order Options - Tax Rates Applied option is used it is global (all lines in the order).

I submit that when you changed it back to Taxable and applied to all lines that it picked up an item that had somehow become non-taxable. By using Order Options, you simply forced that item "back into line" with your tax considerations.

That makes more sense. One item in the parts list set to non-taxable could throw off the calculation. So if I understand this correctly, if you transfer a non-taxable marked part to a normally taxed order, it will remain non-taxable? No dialogues of warning? I ask because I have so little experience with taxes here in NH.

Yes, we have to support the possibility of non-taxable exceptions within an otherwise taxable order.

This would be my assumption as well. Don't forget - you can always print an Audit Trail of any order by hitting CTRL - F10 -
the audit report will print the order out in detail, allowing discovery of anomolies very easy.
