Tips & ideas for using the mgmt software

CEL Code Entry

Postby Rich on Tue Mar 06, 2012 6:12 am

I am looking at slowly adding the "P####" codes into the system. So when a tech walks up and gives me a list of 6 codes I can enter them quickly with mouse clicks. I am kicking around the idea of putting them into the "Notes" tab. Any ideas? I am sure some one has already done this.

Thanks

How are you anticipating on using this? Where does the info go?

i would like to make is so let say......

i get my list, open up the "notes/sublet" tab, where it says "standard notes" scroll to the P#### code and click on it. Then it is on RO. if i have multiple P-codes i repeat. I have to think it would be faster than me typing it all in again and again. Just an idea. I would start with the every day codes P0301, 302......And the P04##'s and work from there.

I am getting less and less help weekly, and need to find more efficient ways to get stuff done. Yah, i know it may only be a few seconds.

I'm trying to follow your process. Who gives you the codes, customer? Tech? Also, where are you putting it and for what reason. (not trying to be wise-ass, I might like this idea)

Tech is working on code, the tech read codes, gives me list of codes. Lets say it is like the car he just did, has ten codes. I have to type that all onto the ro. and if the next car has 8 of the same codes I am re-typing them all over again. If i was to enter them someplace (notes?) I could get the list my tech gives me, open "?" (notes?) and scroll down to P0300 and click on it. that will add it, and the definition, completely to the ro, then to P0??? and do the same. I would think it will take 5 seconds to do it that way, compared to 20-30 with my rocket speed typing. Also I could make sure it is spelled right once and be good two goe. (lol)

This would not be needed to be tracked, followed or any thing else. Just a simple thought to speed things up, kinda like canned jobs or the Revision 9 trick for LOF's. But i didnt want to add 30 P-codes and have some one tell me the way they do it, and have a light bulb moment and see i did it all wrong

That's what I was thinking your intentions were. Didn't want to assume tho.

You can do it in notes, but it shows up as a note. I'm thinking you want to include this in the Work Performed field of the Labor item, yes?

If you get the code testing from OD5.com and click Transfer, it creates a line item on your screen (but not the customers invoice). This comes in handy later to review the exact information you were looking at when work was originally done.

For entry into Labor window, maybe a copy/paste from a Word doc with all the generic codes entered one on a line?

Ric, we don't use the the work requested/work performed as it should be. So if it shows up as a note that would be ok. I just added a note to an Ro, I see now I can click on multiple pre-entered notes and add them all at once. So I could start by clicking on a note that says:

"CEL is on - scanned system found codes" and then click on all codes that apply. I will have to work on the labor end of it some how though. Mabye do the "CEL...." in a labor field and then add the notes right below it. as it prints you won't see any difference.

Tim, that would work......but..... I am the guy that types it all in, and to get the Techs to use OD5 and to transfer it would be a challenge. It is to easy for them to give them to me and make me do it.

The best we have right now is that the Modus will transfer the codes to a file in my computer. I open the file, copy and then paste to the RO. Which is awesome, when they pull codes with the Modus. Some times we use one of them there cheap hand held units.

I'll enter a few of the misfire codes into notes and test it for awhile, see how it goes.

Yeah, if notes works for you then try it out. That should work fine.

I'm not the quickest at the key board but i can enter a series of codes in no time at all. Diagnostic chart is a different think though. I run across a few where there are 10 codes and if one certain code is there all can be caused by it. Now if there wee a quick way to click on the code, hyper to the diagnostic page and transfer it would be great. As it sits now it may take 20 or 30 minutes to track each code (multiple) and line up a game play.

Another thing i do is when i have a ball breaker i make a note on the order (in the note section) that describes the repair in such a way it will trigger my memory. I have a note book in my desk where i list all these little head banger jobs by vehicle and model along with order # that i can refer to. I finally did this after numerous times of "i had this same issue a year or two ago on another gm truck and i'll be damned in i can remember". As soon as i spend hours chasing the issue i'll remember it was a corroded ground in the harness where it sweeps under the inner fender.
